Breif about Acid reflux

Acidreflux is a condition that develops when stomach acid creeps upward into the esophagus. The esophagus is a very sensitive part of the body and has nerves which are irritated by the stomach acid.

Certain foods will cause increase acid in the stomach. These include pizza, chocolate, fried foods, alcohol, and coffee. Certain times of the day are linked with acid reflux attacks. Eating meals late at night will often cause midnight heartburn. However, some people may wake up early in the morning with pain in their chest or a sour taste in their mouth due to the stomach acid.

There are different causes of gastroesophageal reflux disease, also called GERD.

Some people may develop this condition due to a hiatal hernia. This occurs when the stomach slides upwards into the chest and acid leaks into the esophagus. Surgery is sometimes required for this condition.

People who are overweight or pregnant have a much higher risk of acid reflux.

There are different heartburn remedies including antacids such as Tums, Mylanta, or Alka-Seltzer. Acid reducers include Zantac, Prilosec, Prevacid, and Nexium which are all over-the-counter. Talk with your pharmacist to see which medications are safe for you to try for a short-term.

If your symptoms last longer than 2 weeks, then you should speak with your doctor for additional testing or prescription medicines to help with your condition.
